In Russia of the post-WWII era, aging doctor Nicolai (Sergey Makovetsky - DUSKA) returns to an old, abandoned hotel outside of Liepzig, Germany, the place where he first met his great love 50 years ago, and relives his romantic tragedy. The hotel still bears the traces of its impressive past. As a young medical student travelling from Moscow en route to Paris, young Nicolai (Leonid Bichevin) meets and falls in love with the beautiful courtesan Elise (Sylvia Hoeks) at the hotel, which is also a brothel. Nicolai prolongs his stay, despite Elise's friend Nina's (Renata Litvinova - PASSIONS) discouragement. After a few days, it becomes obvious that their love is doomed, and he is forced to depart: Elise "belongs" to the old Count (Dieter Hallervorden - DIE DIDI SHOW), who also owns the hotel. Five years later upon Nicolai's return to the hotel on his was back to Moscow, the Count takes violent measures. Elise makes a choice for the young Nicolai and the Count stops his payments to her. Her debts mean Elise, who has also fallen ill, cannot leave the hotel with Nicolai. Elise asks Nicolai to leave alone, but he refuses. She then pretends to reverse her choice, and returns to the Count. Enraged, Nicolai leaves for Moscow. Some years later, a now wealthy Nicolai returns to the hotel to take revenge on his rival. Nicolai snubs Elise and returns for good to Moscow. Elise, desperately alone and ill, remains in the empty hotel, which is closed down following the Count's death. 50 years later, old Nicolai receives a visit at his office in Moscow from old Nina (Svetlana Svetlichnaya - THE DIAMOND ARM). She brings him a book of Pushkin poems containing a handwritten message for Nicolai from Elise. Nicolai decides to return to the hotel forever to relive the tragedy that embodies the end of an era and the vibrant hopes and life of both its young couple and of a new world. (c) Shadow

A father and his estranged son hit the road under less than ideal circumstances in Jacob Berger's 2002 film A Loving Father. Famed novelist Leo Shepherd (Gerard Depardieu) has just been notified, via his daughter Virginia (Sylvie Testud), that he is to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. His son Paul (Guillaume Depardieu) also learns of his father's good fortune and attempts to call with his congratulations -- adulations that fall on deaf ears due to a falling out Paul had with his father several years previously. Leo, rather rashly, mounts a motorcycle to make the journey northward from his remote domicile in Switzerland to Sweden to collect the prize, against the advice of his family and close advisors. Paul, still wishing to connect with his father, attempts to catch up with him on the road -- doing so at the scene of an accident that Leo has barely managed to survive. Paul stows his dazed father into his car and sets out to find a hospital. Leo, ever the curmudgeon, strongly denies any need for the hospital and insists he be let on his way, forcing Paul to harness his father to the back seat of his car. Now provided with the opportunity to reach out to his father, Paul continues the voyage his father started and the two are forced to reconcile their differences along the way. A Loving Father was screened at the 2002 Locarno International Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

Bringing a feminine perspective to the debate that's currently raging across the nation, Cathryne Czubek's new feature documentary A GIRL AND A GUN reveals how women have embraced an object whose history is deeply bound to men and masculinity. Filmed throughout the U.S., the film delves deep into the psyche of the American gun world to show the complex relationship between American women and their guns. Penetrating far beyond Hollywood's hyper-sexualized femme fatales, A GIRL AND A GUN candidly explores the modern American woman through intimate portraits of several women that revolve around fundamental issues of preservation, power, feminism and violence. Punctuated with archival footage and expert commentary to provide a rich historical and cultural context, the film presents a complex and empowering perspective on a deadly serious issue. The intimate and graphic portrayals in A GIRL AND A GUN are of women who've carved themselves a place in the gun community, but their personal journeys in one way or another reflect the same issues every woman faces today. A GIRL AND A GUN will not end the nation's decisive battle over the legality or availability of guns, but it does give voice to those American women, young and old, who have been affected by firearms or believe in the right to responsibly and legally possess firearms.(c) First Run Features

Cast: John Williams Mark Mothersbaugh Edward R. Murrow

The feature-length documentary is a music-filled biographical film about the life and work of Raymond Scott. It also is a personal investigation into the father/son dynamic - what it means to have a famous father obsessed with his work and the consequent impact on the parent/child relationship. Raymond Scott was more comfortable with technology than with people, including his own children. This personal angle is intertwined with the compelling story of a true American music innovator - one who had a meteoric rise to household-name success, followed by a slow spiral into obscurity and now, posthumously, a growing acknowledgment of his central role in modern music and music technology. In recent years his work has been performed by groups ranging from Rush, Devo, and They Might Be Giants to the Kronos Quartet, and sampled by numerous DJs and hip-hop acts, and adapted by the virtual super-group Gorillaz. This documentary is a vibrant tapestry of stills, home movies, film and television excerpts (Scott was orchestra leader on the weekly Your Hit Parade TV show during the 1950s), musical performances and interviews. My father recorded virtually everything said in the studio, including his phone conversations, and there are lengthy audio interviews. Therefore much of the story is told in his own words - revealing a complicated, often dysfunctional family; at times humorous in conveying Scott's own quirkiness, and serious in dealing with his rigorous devotion to all aspects of his creative and technical life. Naturally it is scored with Scott's music, covering a wide range of styles, including swinging jazz pieces played by the Raymond Scott Quintette, the groundbreaking group that brought him his early fame in the 1930s. In his middle years he returned to his first love - electronics, and he was a synthesizer pioneer. His crowning invention was the Electronium, a "simultaneous composition and performance machine" that was purchased by Motown. There are also cartoon excerpts - Carl Stalling, the music director at Warner Brothers adapted 20 of Scott's quirky, original tunes ("Powerhouse" being the most famous) to amplify the adventures of Bugs Bunny and company. Family interviews include his daughter Carrie, and two of his wives; first wife Pearl, and third, Mitzi. Unfortunately his second wife and protege, the singer/actress Dorothy Collins, died in 1994, before production of this film commenced; the fascinating story of their relationship is told through the recollections of others. Other interviewees include multi-Academy Award (R)-winning movie soundtrack composer John Williams ("STAR WARS"), whose father Johnny was the drummer in the Raymond Scott Quintette; musician, movie & TV score writer, and DEVO co-founder, Mark Mothersbaugh, Grammy (R)-nominated clarinetist Don Byron, Music and concert Producer Hal Willner ("Saturday Night Live"), co-inventor of the MOOG Synthesizer, Herb Deutsch, turntablist, producer, and author, Paul D. Miller aka DJ Spooky; Grammy (R)-nominated violinist Jeremy Cohen, and many others. The film is the defining portrait of this under-recognized American icon

A sudden family crisis sends three siblings off on an adventure in this comedy-drama set in working-class England in 1987. Noel (Timmy Creed) is the oldest of three bothers living with their ailing father. Noel and his siblings -- eleven-year-old Paudie (Paul Courtney), who is quick with a joke and dreams of playing professional football some day, and seven-year-old Scwally (T.J. Griffin), who is shy and fascinated with Star Wars even though he hasn't actually seen the film -- are all having a hard time dealing with the knowledge that their father has only a short time to live. When Dad falls asleep, Noel takes off his watch for safekeeping, but when he gets in a fight the timepiece is broken beyond repair. Though the watch was just a cheap digital model, it was Dad's most prized possession, won at an amusement park in Ballybunion; Noel doesn't want Dad to know what happened, so he "borrows" a bread truck from a neighbor and sets off for Ballybunion to find a replacement. Since he hurt his hand in the fight, Noel brings Paudie along to help him work the gear shift, and Scwally is allowed to tag along so he won't tell on his brothers; the brothers see plenty of sights have some unexpected adventures along the way as they look for the watch and come to terms with their father's illness. My Brothers was the firs feature film from screenwriter Paul Fraser. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
