When the African savannah runs dry and water becomes a precious commodity, a courageous meerkat and a laid back lion prepare to go the distance in order to avoid dying of thirst. In seasons past, a single mountain canyon provided enough water for all the creatures in the savannah. But this year, not a drop has fallen. Buffalos and rhinos stand guard over the only watering hole for miles, and if the creatures don't act fast, they will surely perish. Desperate, Billy the meerkat and Socrates the lion set out to find sustenance. Upon crossing paths with a rooster named Charles, the pair learns of a place in the Okavango Delta where the water still flows. But by the time Charles leads them there, the humans have already staked their claim on the small reserve. Meanwhile, local entrepreneur Smith has constructed a dam in order to the precious divert water to his luxury hotel. When Billy and Socrates learn that the hotel is hosting a conference on natural preservation, they call in all of their animal friends in order to teach the thoughtless politicians a thing or two about sharing the land. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Curious, compelling and compassionate, Denis Cote's contemplative portrait of animals in captivity is, put simply, a series of beautifully framed and composed tableaux of a variety of animals at Quebec's Parc Safari; but it's also a complex meditation on the relationship between man, beast and environment. Cote lets his often startling imagery speak for itself, giving us, the viewer, plenty time, and food, for thought.

Could two American artists have less in common than Sol LeWitt and Llyn Foulkes? Yet both, in their own way, help define what is exciting and cutting-edge in contemporary art. LeWitt (1928-2007) - a notoriously camera-shy, self-effacing, and generous soul - counts among the 20th century's most esteemed conceptual artists. Dutch filmmaker Chris Teerink weaves together rare archival material with footage of the 2011 installation of Wall Drawing #801: Spiral - a glorious white line spiraling down the black wall of a cupola for more than 3 miles. Llyn Foulkes is the West Coast wild man to LeWitt's ascetic East Coast intellectual. Whether talking about his work and life, painting at all hours of the day or night, or making music (he literally is a one-man band), Foulkes embodies the obsessive rebel -- filled with anger, regret, fear, and narcissism - plus a great many hilarious stories about the L.A. art world. His wonderfully macabre paintings and constructions (some incorporating small dead animals) have recently been rediscovered, and his 8-years-in-the-making magnum opus, The Lost Frontier, was purchased by L.A.'s Hammer Museum. Convento is more than a film to watch. Convento is a film immersion. At the convergence of the rivers Oeiras and Guadiana, along what some believe to be a ley line possessing mystical energies, rises the four hundred year old monastery Sao Francisco. Its light earthen walls, marked by the sun and time, house a labyrinth of terraces, courtyards, gardens and fountains, all offering secret places to contemplate. An ancient irrigation system delivers water throughout, a silvery artery connecting all life. The monastery is surrounded by a surrealist storybook landscape, an amalgam of desert palms and cacti and a forest's darker, cooler life, within which animals of all kinds secretly contemplate. Originally built for an abbot and twelve monks, it is now a home, nature preserve, and artist's studio. -- (C) Official Site

The first 3D film shot in Australia, Cane Toads The Conquest is director Mark Lewis' sequel of sorts to his 1987 cult classic Cane Toads: An Unnatural History, which broke the nature film mold wide open - not only due to its irreverent attitude, but because, unlike most popular documentaries about animals, it was not about a cuddly, endangered species. On the contrary, it was about a feared, reviled, some would even go so far as to say ugly, swamp-dweller run amok. This time around, Lewis takes a giant leap forward as he revs up the technology, giving us, as he puts it 'Avatoad' (in homage to a famous 3D milestone) to once again track the unstoppable march of the cane toad across the Australian continent, now occupying nearly a third of the country, and continuing to spread and evolve into a bigger, faster, even more robust creature. -- (C) Rialto
