Acclaimed director Claire Denis's jagged, daringly fragmented and darkest film is a genuinely contemporary film noir inspired by recent French sex ring scandals involving men of wealth and power. Vincent Lindon (Denis's Friday Night) stars as Marco, a sea captain gone AWOL to avenge his brother-in-law's suicide and to rescue his estranged sister and his teenaged niece (Lola Creton, Goodbye First Love); Chiara Mastroianni (A Christmas Tale) is Lindon's married lover, who has sold her soul in exchange for the security of her young son; and the remarkable Michel Subor is her husband - a sleazy financier who is the very embodiment of an evil beyond comprehension. Denis takes the viewer into the very heart of darkness in her most unsettling film yet, an unforgettable and thrilling commentary on late capitalism. On behalf of Sundance Selects, you and a guest are invited to a screening of SOMETHING IN THE AIR, the newest film by French filmmaker Olivier Assayas. Following his critical triumphs, SUMMER HOURS and CARLOS, Assayas' semi-autobiographical new feature is a vibrant, incisively crafted story of a young man's artistic awakening in the politically turbulent French student movement of the early '70s. In a nod to his earlier film COLD WATER, Assayas' surrogate Gilles (newcomer Clement Metayer) is a graduating high school student in Paris deeply involved in the counterculture of the time. While Gilles begins to realize that his interests lie more in the revolutions in music and art, he finds himself pulled into ever more dangerous political protests by the people around him, especially his radicalized girlfriend (Lola Creton of GOODBYE FIRST LOVE). Illuminating and elegiac, Assayas' story celebrates that thrilling, evanescent moment in history when young people could feel revolution just within their grasp.

Set on the last day of the school year, THE WE AND THE I follows a group of Bronx high schoolers who board a city bus on their way home. With summer break ahead of them, and feeling more liberated than usual, this broad array of kids--the cool ones, the outsiders, and everyone in between--act out as only teenagers can and, in the course of one afternoon, their friendships, rivalries, ambitions, and anxieties are revealed. Gondry workshopped the project with students at a neighborhood after-school arts program in the Bronx, and his large ensemble cast, all of them first-timers, essentially play themselves, though the script (which Gondry wrote with Jeffrey Grimshaw and Paul Proch) artfully creates a fully formed vision of the life these kids live and the future that awaits them. Though set almost entirely on the bus, Gondry enlarges the film's visual canvas with mobile phone videos, text messages, and a series of trompe l'oeil effects executed with his customary flair and inventiveness.

Like so many actors she is not completely sure about the difference between real life and the theater and - as she willingly admits - she really doesn't want to. Stinging from a recent romantic break-up, she retreats to the safety of her parents' ramshackle upstate country house - just 45 minutes from Broadway- where her non-theatrical sister (Julie Davis) and her sister's non-Jewish fiance (Judd Nelson) are also arriving for the weekend and the family's yearly Passover Seder, which is presided over by another uncle (Michael Emil). I Do is directed by Glenn Gaylord (writer/producer of "Leave it on the Floor") and produced by Stephen Israel ("Swimming with Sharks," "Boy Culture") and David W. Ross. Ross also wrote the film, which has won numerous Audience Awards at film festivals throughout the country, and the "Best of the Fest" Award at this year's Palm Springs Film Festival. The film views marriage equality in the U.S. through the prism of immigration rights. Stepping right into the middle of the marriage equality debate, I Do is the deeply affecting story about a man forced by discrimination to make an impossible choice. Yet while both sides of the issue passionately state their cases, what's left in the balance are families and couples often split apart, especially those with bi-national makeups. Immigration, which most heterosexual couples take for granted as a given, complicates same-sex relationships, even in states where marriage is now legal.(c) Gravitas Ventures

In this wryly inventive parable, a kingdom is divided into the three castes: the impeccably painted Alldunns who reside in a majestic palace; the Halfies who the Painter has left incomplete; and the untouchable Sketchies, simple charcoal outlines who are banished to the cursed forest. Chastised for her forbidden love for an Alldunn and shamed by her unadorned face, Halfie Claire runs away into the forest. Her beloved Ramo and best friend Lola journey after her, passing between the forbidden Death Flowers that guard the boundaries of the forest (in one of the film's most radiantly gorgeous scenes), and arriving finally at the very edge of the painting - where they tumble through the canvas and into the Painter's studio. The abandoned workspace is strewn with paintings, each containing its own animated world - and in a feast for both the eyes and imagination, they explore first one picture and then another, attempting to discover just what the Painter has in mind for all his creations.
