Oranges and Sunshine tells the story of Margaret Humphreys (Emily Watson), a social worker from Nottingham, who uncovered one of the most significant social scandals of recent times; the mass deportation of children from the United Kingdom to Australia. Single-handedly and against overwhelming odds, Margaret reunited thousands of families and drew worldwide attention to an extraordinary miscarriage of justice. Children as young as four had been told that their parents were dead and sent to children's homes on the other side of the world, where many were subjected to appalling abuse. These forgotten children were promised Oranges and Sunshine but they got hard labour and life in institutions. -- (C) Icon

A further entry in the rapidly proliferating, rich vein of documentary/fiction hybrids, Oliver Laxe's You All Are Captains channels the meta-textuality, genre bending, and sensitivity towards children found in the best work of Abbas Kiarostami and Francois Truffaut. Laxe himself stars as a self-described "neo-colonialist" filmmaker who goes to Tangiers ostensibly to hold a series of film workshops for disadvantaged street children. It quickly becomes clear, however, that Laxe's intentions are not purely disinterested, as he begins to turn these children into pawns in the service of his own film. As the kids resist Laxe's project, the film becomes a fascinating combination of self-reflexivity, self-deprecation, and documentary portraiture (of the children and of life in Tangiers). -- (C) Anthology

Francisco Barreiro and Laura Caro play parents Felix and Sol whose preteen son and daughter inexplicably reappear after being lost overnight on a desolate, cave-riddled mountainside after a casual hike became every parent's nightmare. The good luck and good fortune of their return soon changes, as the children's behavior suggests ominous and unspeakable events the night the children were lost that continue even now. As a loving couple - and loving parents - try to care for and protect their children, the ancient and half-whispered legends around the caves and the mountain and those who have gone there before become too strange to believe ... and too dangerous, no matter how insane, to ignore. Over a ten-week period, Pierre teaches 10-year-old Palestinian-Israeli and Jewish- Israeli children to dance and compete together. Dancing in Jaffa explores the complex stories of three different children, who are forced to confront issues of identity, segregation and racial prejudice as they dance with their enemy. The classroom becomes a microcosm of the Middle East's struggle to work together harmoniously while still caught in the politics of the region and race. With the guidance of Pierre, the children learn to dance together and trust one another. Dancing In Jaffa offers an up-close-and-personal perspective of how the future might unfold if the art of movement and dance could triumph over the politics of history and geography. (c) IFC Films

Still I Strive is a story of transcendence through compassion, unity and hope. At one orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the performing arts are the path to healing and transformation. Guided by their matriarch Peng Phan, a renowned actress in her own right, the children aspire to achieve one of the highest honors in Cambodian society, to perform in front of Princess Bopha Devi as a symbol of their culture and heritage. Interspersed throughout the documentary are narrative film sequences featuring the children as actors. With an epic battle at the opening, a chase scene through the forest, horror sequences, and melodrama, the narrative parallels the documentary of the children's tragic back stories. By weaving facts with fiction, reality with dreams, the film reveals where these lines ultimately merge by its conclusion. The journey mirrors the travails of the nation as it struggles to leave behind the unprecedented destruction of human dignity, the tragic legacy of the Khmer Rouge era. Together, they learn to overcome the past and pave the way to the future by being faithful to the present. (c) Official Site
