Directed by acclaimed filmmaker James Franco, and based on the chilling novel by Cormac McCarthy, Child of God, tells the provocative story of Lester Ballad (Scott Haze), a dispossessed, violent man, attempting to exist outside the social order. Consecutively deprived of parents and housing and driven by famished loneliness, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation. Set in a small town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee in the 1960s, Child of God is structured in three segments with each segment describing Ballad's ever-growing isolation of from society and social mores. Child of God also stars Jim Parrack (True Blood), Tim Blake Nelson and features an appearance by James Franco. Co-Written by Franco and Vince Joliette, Child of God is produced by Caroline Aragon, Vince Jolivette, and Miles Levy. (C) Well Go USA

Pray for Japan is a feature length documentary film I began when volunteering in Tohoku, Japan after the earthquake and tsunami tragedy. I shot 40 hours of footage over 5 weeks in Tohoku, interviewing over 30 people - from victims to volunteers. The goal of the film is to share with the world the same inspiration I felt from meeting these real-life heroes. No matter how difficult, how insurmountable was the challenge they faced, these people overcame. The battle to rebuild Tohoku and Japan continues - and the world must not forget their story. -- (C) Official Site

For aspiring comedian Donna Stern, everyday life as a female twenty-something provides ample material for her incredibly relatable brand of humor. On stage, Donna is unapologetically herself, joking about topics as intimate as her sex life and as crude as her day-old underwear. But when Donna gets dumped, loses her job, and finds herself pregnant just in time for Valentine's Day, she has to navigate the murky waters of independent adulthood for the first time. As she grapples with an uncertain financial future, an unwanted pregnancy, and a surprising new suitor, Donna begins to discover that the most terrifying thing about adulthood isn't facing it all on her own. It's allowing herself to accept the support and love of others. And be truly vulnerable. Never failing to find the comedy and humanity in each awkward situation she encounters, Donna finds out along the way what it means to be as brave in life as she is on stage. Anchored by a breakout performance from Jenny Slate, OBVIOUS CHILD is a winning discovery, packed tight with raw, energetic comedy and moments of poignant human honesty. Writer/Director Gillian Robespierre handles the topic of Donna's unwanted pregnancy with a refreshing matter-of-factness rarely seen onscreen. And with Donna, Slate and Robespierre have crafted a character for the ages - a female audiences will recognize, cheer for, and love. (C) A24

Seeking a better life for herself and her daughter, Lisa, Jian Ping left China in 1986 to pursue graduate studies in the U.S. She left behind her parents, former senior government officials, but not the memory of their shattered lives. Jian's daughter, Lisa, joined her in Queens, New York when the girl was four-and-a-half. They moved to Chicago, where Jian joined corporate America, eventually becoming the national director of Tsingtao Beer. Lisa's childhood was the reverse of her mother's, growing up as an utterly unencumbered American girl; living in suburban Chicago Lisa earned a great education, built a successful public relations career and learned to enjoy the best parts of life: good friends, worldwide travel and partying. However, both mother and daughter felt an ever-widening breach in their relationship. The more Jian longed for a closer relationship and for Lisa to know her family roots, the further she pulled away, culminating in Lisa's disinterest in Jian's memoir, which had taken her eight years to write.

When the Cold War ended, the generations that lived through it were relieved to finally vanquish the specter of a mushroom cloud from their minds. But today, thousands of nuclear weapons in the United States and Russia remain on high-alert, still poised to destroy the planet. In Japan, atomic bomb survivors struggle with nightmarish memories and negative health effects; atomic veterans, down-winders, and atomic workers around the globe also continue to suffer from the effects of radiation exposure. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 may have temporarily damaged the soul of Japan, but has anyone ever taken an account of what the Bomb has done, and continues to do, to the soul of the country that dropped it? How might we alter the soul of a nation in order to truly live without the threat of total destruction? In a globe-trotting journey through various perspectives on nuclear weapons, filmmaker Bud Ryan takes us from the Peace Museums of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to the "Nuclear Science" museums of the United States; to the place that birthed the atomic bomb, (and cares for it still) the state of New Mexico, where Ryan now lives. Featuring former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz, authors Gar Alperovitz and Jonathan Schell, Japanese bomb survivors, and many others, THE FORGOTTEN BOMB explores our pre-conceptions about nuclear weapons and their history, investigates how they inform our sense of identity and discovers what the Bomber can learn from the Bombed. www.forgottenbomb.com. Mental illness is a real and growing problem in Japan, but one that is not acknowledged in many quarters. Government funding for mental health care has been shrinking, putting a greater burden on existing clinics and their staffs, and a strong stigma against acknowledging psychological problems is still common. Dr. Masatomo Yamamoto is a psychiatrist who runs Chorale Okayama, an outpatient mental health facility in Japan, and filmmaker Kazuhiro Soda presents a glimpse into his work and his patients in the documentary Seishin (aka Mental). Among those seeking help at Chorale Okayama are a woman who murdered her own child, a businessman who can no longer handle the stress of his job, and a woman who developed an eating disorder after being taunted for her fat legs; Yamamoto's other patients are dealing with everything from multiple personality to panic disorder. Yamamoto's goal is to return as many of his clients as possible to a productive life in society, and offers occupational therapy in two small businesses affiliated with Chorale Okayama, a dairy and a restaurant. However, though Yamamoto has much to be proud of, he usually finds himself dealing with more than he has the resources to handle, and a handful of his clients opt to commit suicide rather than see their treatment through. Mental was an official selection at the 2009 Miami International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Sushi, a cuisine formerly found only in Japan, has grown exponentially in other nations, and an industry has been created to support it. In a rush to please a hungry public, the expensive delicacy has become common and affordable, appearing in restaurants, supermarkets and even fast food trailers. The traditions requiring 7 years of apprenticeship in Japan have given way to quick training and mass-manufactured solutions elsewhere. This hunger for sushi has led to the depletion of apex predators in the ocean, including bluefin tuna, to such a degree that it has the potential to upset the ecological balance of the world's oceans, leading to a collapse of all fish species. -- (C) Official Site

The fairy Carabosse places a curse upon the child- saying at sixteen the girl will prick her hand and die. This spare, haunting, deceptively slight film - marking the feature debut of French filmmaker Valerie Massadian - zeroes in on the behavior and existential state of its 4-year-old protagonist. Growing up in rural France, Nana lives in a seemingly idyllic environment, but Massadian increasingly complicates our notion of the child's innocence. Opening with a matter-of-fact depiction of the butchering of a pig (Nana lives on her grandfather's pig farm), the film gradually tightens its focus to convey the child's perspective as she entertains herself in solitude. The subtlety and ingenuity with which Massadian reveals aspects of Nana's environment through the details of her playing is astounding, and only gradually do we come to realize the full, disturbing extent of her situation. Founded on the remarkable rapport between filmmaker and infant actress - "There's not one word, one gesture - nothing - that I imposed on her. We played", Massadian told Interview Magazine - NANA is a delicate, unsettling, and uniquely affecting film. (c) Anthology
