A father and his estranged son hit the road under less than ideal circumstances in Jacob Berger's 2002 film A Loving Father. Famed novelist Leo Shepherd (Gerard Depardieu) has just been notified, via his daughter Virginia (Sylvie Testud), that he is to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. His son Paul (Guillaume Depardieu) also learns of his father's good fortune and attempts to call with his congratulations -- adulations that fall on deaf ears due to a falling out Paul had with his father several years previously. Leo, rather rashly, mounts a motorcycle to make the journey northward from his remote domicile in Switzerland to Sweden to collect the prize, against the advice of his family and close advisors. Paul, still wishing to connect with his father, attempts to catch up with him on the road -- doing so at the scene of an accident that Leo has barely managed to survive. Paul stows his dazed father into his car and sets out to find a hospital. Leo, ever the curmudgeon, strongly denies any need for the hospital and insists he be let on his way, forcing Paul to harness his father to the back seat of his car. Now provided with the opportunity to reach out to his father, Paul continues the voyage his father started and the two are forced to reconcile their differences along the way. A Loving Father was screened at the 2002 Locarno International Film Festival. ~ Ryan Shriver, Rovi

Still I Strive is a story of transcendence through compassion, unity and hope. At one orphanage in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the performing arts are the path to healing and transformation. Guided by their matriarch Peng Phan, a renowned actress in her own right, the children aspire to achieve one of the highest honors in Cambodian society, to perform in front of Princess Bopha Devi as a symbol of their culture and heritage. Interspersed throughout the documentary are narrative film sequences featuring the children as actors. With an epic battle at the opening, a chase scene through the forest, horror sequences, and melodrama, the narrative parallels the documentary of the children's tragic back stories. By weaving facts with fiction, reality with dreams, the film reveals where these lines ultimately merge by its conclusion. The journey mirrors the travails of the nation as it struggles to leave behind the unprecedented destruction of human dignity, the tragic legacy of the Khmer Rouge era. Together, they learn to overcome the past and pave the way to the future by being faithful to the present. (c) Official Site

In 90 minutes, we see the GDR more sharply, more clearly: the skater subculture shows that not all was grey-on-grey and drab clouds of Trabant fumes. This Wildfremd production (Ronald Vietz & Michael Schobel) by director Martin Persiel takes original clips of the "wheel-board-riders" - straight out of the East German scene in the 80s - and mixes it with animations and reencounters with the protagonists today. It is not just a well thought out story on its own - this film also raises the aesthetic bar. "Skating as freedom" is one of the leitmotifs of this film. Skating "without pressure to be better than someone else," as one of the main characters puts it, became the goal in hindsight, or, said downright harshly, "the desire for freedom turned lifestyle". Unbelievable, if not for the simple fact that this Californian fun could find its expression in the GDR. (c) Official Site

On January 3, 1889 in Turin, Italy, Friedrich Nietzsche steps out of the doorway of number six, Via Carlo Albert. Not far from him, a cab driver is having trouble with a stubborn horse. The horse refuses to move, whereupon the driver loses his patience and takes his whip to it. Nietzsche puts an end to the brutal scene, throwing his arms around the horse's neck, sobbing. After this, he lies motionless and silent for two days on a divan, until he loses consciousness and his mind. Somewhere in the countryside, the driver of the cab lives with his daughter and the horse. Outside, a windstorm rages. Immaculately photographed in Bela Tarr's renowned long takes, THE TURIN HORSE is the final statement from a master filmmaker.

Ten years after exploding onto the international music scene with their debut album Boy, in 1990 U2 were struggling to reinvent themselves and find a new direction. The 1988 concert film Rattle and Hum and its accompanying soundtrack album didn't please fans or critics, and the group's attempts to fuse American roots music with their trademark style clearly wasn't working. The four members of the group -- vocalist Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. -- were at odds with one another and uncertain about their musical future. The group responded to their dilemma by throwing out their self-imposed rule book and making the album Achtung, Baby, in which the group faced down their uncertainties and responded with the most stylistically ambitious music they'd ever created. Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim offers a rare glimpse into U2's creative process with the documentary From The Sky On Down, in which the band discusses the making of Achtung, Baby and opens up about the issues within the band and in the outside world that inspired its creation. The film also includes rare audio and video of U2 in rehearsal and in the studio while the album was in production. From The Sky Down received its world premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Before there was HD there was Super 8. Before Independent film there was Underground Cinema. And before New York there was...well, New York. Once upon a pre-Facebook time, before creative communities became virtual and viral, cultural movements were firmly grounded in geography. And the undisputed center of American - some would say international - art and film was New York City. In particular, downtown Manhattan in the late 1970's and 80's was the anchor of vanguard filmmaking. BLANK CITY tells the long-overdue tale of the motley crew of renegade filmmakers that emerged from an economically bankrupt and dangerous period of New York History. It's a fascinating look at the way this misfit cinema used the deserted, bombed-out Lower East Side landscapes to craft daring works that would go on to profoundly influence Independent Film today. Unlike the much-celebrated punk music scene, this era's thrilling and confrontational underground film movement has never before been chronicled. Directed by French newcomer Celine Danhier, BLANK CITY captures the idiosyncratic, explosive energy of the "No Wave Cinema" and "Cinema of Transgression" movements. Stark and provocative, the films drew name and inspiration from the French New Wave; as well as Film Noir, and the works of Andy Warhol and John Waters. Filmmakers such as Jim Jarmusch, Eric Mitchell, Beth B, Charlie Ahear, Lizzie Borden and Amos Poe showcased the city's vibrant grit and bore witness to the rising East Village art and rock scenes and the birth of hip hop. Short, long, color or black-and-white, their stripped-down films portrayed themes of alienation and dissonance with a raw and genuine spirit, at times with deadpan humor blurring the lines between fiction and reality. --(c) Insurgent Media
