John Woo established himself as one of Hong Kong's premiere action directors with this ultra-hip, ultra-violent action classic. The film centers around the complex relationship between two brothers: Sung Tse-kit (Leslie Cheung) is a recent graduate of the police academy while Tse-ho (Ti Lung) runs a massive counterfeiting ring along with his gangland associate, Mark Lee (Chow Yun-fat). Tension between the two brothers comes to a head when their father is murdered after a crime deal goes sour and Tse-ho lands in jail after being double-crossed. In perhaps the most influential scene in Hong Kong cinema in the 1980s, Mark avenges his friend by staging a dinner table assassination. As Mark tries to shoot his way out of the restaurant, pulling a series of hidden pistols from potted plants and alcoves, he gets horribly injured. With both founding members of the counterfeiting syndicate incapacitated, the operation falls into the hands of Shing (Waise Lee Chi-hung), Tse-ho's former underling who has little of his boss' elan or experience. When Tse-ho gets out of jail, he reunites with his now-crippled comrade, Mark, to take out Shing and to protect Tse-kit whose life is in danger for investigating their former subordinate. ~ Jonathan Crow, Rovi

Frank (Emile Hirsch) and Jerry Lee Flannigan (Stephen Dorff) work odd jobs, drink hard, and drift from motel to motel. Everything changes when Jerry Lee is involved in a hit-and-run accident, which forces the brothers across the state to the home of Frank's old flame, Annie (Dakota Fanning). While the two seem safe from the law, Jerry Lee's insatiability and all-consuming guilt render their future increasingly uncertain. Like an outlaw country song, this directorial debut from real-life brothers Gabe & Alan Polsky finds beauty and hope in a world of casinos, gun shops, dive bars, and in the simple people who inhabit them. Delving deep into the underbelly of India's film industry, where back-alley producers churn out everything from pulpy horror movies to soft-core porn, MISS LOVELY takes us back to the Mumbai of the 1980s with lurid detail and intoxicating style. Working out of sleazy hotels and abandoned warehouses, brothers Sonu (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) and Vicky (Anil George) are prolific producers of trashy, C-grade films for Mumbai's booming and underground markets. The ambitious, domineering Vicky is the unquestioned brains of the operation, leading the dim-witted Sonu deeper into a world of divas, money men and movie-loving gangsters. But this precarious partnership is put to the test when the brothers meet Pinky (Niharika Singh), an exquisite ingenue with a shady past. Director Ashim Ahluwalia has created a hyper-stylized, retro thriller that explores the awful truths of exploitation cinema as well as its strange pleasures. (C) DADA Films

Corvo, the smallest island in the archipelago of the Azores, is the westernmost point of Europe, a tiny speck of land in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, dominated by the immense crater of a volcano, and inhabited by a single village of 440 people. Accompanied only by his soundman/composer Didio Pestana, filmmaker Goncalo Tocha spent several years journeying back and forth between mainland Portugal and Corvo. Fueled by the impossible, quixotic desire to create an exhaustive record of the island and its inhabitants - their landscape, their daily lives, their industry, their pursuits, their stories, their memories - Tocha has created a poetic yet richly detailed portrait of a uniquely isolated community, one that has existed for 500 years but has rarely been documented. Combining anthropological records, literature, lost archives, and mythological and autobiographical stories, IT'S THE EARTH NOT THE MOON is a beautiful and astoundingly engrossing chronicle of a civilization stranded in the middle of the sea.

Storytelling in all its forms is skewered in The Catechism Cataclysm. In this divinely bizarre and funny tale, wild characters infuse stories within stories until the lines between the Bible, Mark Twain, and campfire tales are hilariously blurred. Father Billy (Steve Little), an eccentric young priest, is forced to take asabbatical by his superiors when he is discovered telling inappropriate parables to his flock. Billy tracks down his high-school idol Robbie (Robert Longstreet), who begrudgingly agrees to a canoe trip. On the water, the two men reminisce about Billy's days as the keyboardist in a Christian band and Robbie's as a guitarist for a metal band. When night approaches, they realize they have lost their way--and that's when things get weird. -- (C) IFC Midnight

A bride comes on to a priest in a motel room. A bouquet of flowers from a stranger takes on a life of its own. A man's last day at the office proves to be the longest day of all. It's family moving day, but no one's moving. This is Something Better Somewhere Else - a collective tale of yearning and restlessness told through four distinct but thematically linked stories. Inspired by the best short story collections and the almost lost art of the concept album, the film explores the question: Why is that who and where we are so often pales in comparison to who and where we imagine we could be? By turns romantic, harrowing and funny, the stories of Something Better Somewhere Else follow the odd adventures of people who step outside of their everyday lives to see if there really is something better.
