Consecutively deprived of parents and housing and driven by famished loneliness, Ballard descends literally and figuratively to the level of a cave dweller as he falls deeper into crime and degradation. Set in a small town in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in Tennessee in the 1960s, Child of God is structured in three segments with each segment describing Ballad's ever-growing isolation of from society and social mores. For aspiring comedian Donna Stern, everyday life as a female twenty-something provides ample material for her incredibly relatable brand of humor. On stage, Donna is unapologetically herself, joking about topics as intimate as her sex life and as crude as her day-old underwear. But when Donna gets dumped, loses her job, and finds herself pregnant just in time for Valentine's Day, she has to navigate the murky waters of independent adulthood for the first time. As she grapples with an uncertain financial future, an unwanted pregnancy, and a surprising new suitor, Donna begins to discover that the most terrifying thing about adulthood isn't facing it all on her own. It's allowing herself to accept the support and love of others. And be truly vulnerable. Never failing to find the comedy and humanity in each awkward situation she encounters, Donna finds out along the way what it means to be as brave in life as she is on stage. Anchored by a breakout performance from Jenny Slate, OBVIOUS CHILD is a winning discovery, packed tight with raw, energetic comedy and moments of poignant human honesty. Writer/Director Gillian Robespierre handles the topic of Donna's unwanted pregnancy with a refreshing matter-of-factness rarely seen onscreen. And with Donna, Slate and Robespierre have crafted a character for the ages - a female audiences will recognize, cheer for, and love. (C) A24

Seeking a better life for herself and her daughter, Lisa, Jian Ping left China in 1986 to pursue graduate studies in the U.S. She left behind her parents, former senior government officials, but not the memory of their shattered lives. Jian's daughter, Lisa, joined her in Queens, New York when the girl was four-and-a-half. They moved to Chicago, where Jian joined corporate America, eventually becoming the national director of Tsingtao Beer. Lisa's childhood was the reverse of her mother's, growing up as an utterly unencumbered American girl; living in suburban Chicago Lisa earned a great education, built a successful public relations career and learned to enjoy the best parts of life: good friends, worldwide travel and partying. However, both mother and daughter felt an ever-widening breach in their relationship. The more Jian longed for a closer relationship and for Lisa to know her family roots, the further she pulled away, culminating in Lisa's disinterest in Jian's memoir, which had taken her eight years to write.

The celebration begins in October with the nationwide release of "John Carpenter's Halloween" and continues through the month with "Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers" and "Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers" in select theaters. During its Golden Age in the 1960s and early 70s, the Cambodian film industry produced hundreds of feature films - vibrant, energetic movies that incorporated drama, romance, fantasy, and, almost always, elaborate musical numbers and indelible songs - which drew large and devoted audiences. With the rise of the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime in the mid-70s, this cinematic legacy was nearly eradicated - the theaters forcibly closed, the majority of the films destroyed, the directors, writers, and actors largely imprisoned, exiled, or executed. Davy Chou's highly accomplished documentary, GOLDEN SLUMBERS, is hence an invaluable work of cultural excavation and preservation. Through clips from the handful of surviving films, audio recordings of their soundtracks, visits to some of the sites where the films were shot or exhibited, and above all, extended interviews with the filmmakers, producers, performers, and devoted cinephiles who together created and sustained Cambodian film culture during its Golden Age, Chou reconstructs this tragically but intriguingly lost world. Himself the grandson of one of the leading film producers of the time, Van Chann, Chou is no distanced observer, and GOLDEN SLUMBERS is a deeply committed chronicle of a chapter of film (and world) history that can only be directly apprehended in bits and pieces today, but that continues to exist in the memories and stories of its surviving creators and devotees.(c) Icarus

Hollywood discovered Peggy-Jean Montgomery when she was 19 months old and made her a star by the age of two. By the time she was six, she had made more than 150 popular shorts and a star of feature films. In fact, she was one of the most popular stars in Hollywood with a line of Baby Peggy products sold in stores around the world. By the age of 11, however, she was a has-been, forced to work eight shows a day in Vaudeville. And soon, like rival silent film star Jackie Coogan, she was broke, her money squandered by her family. Over the course of the next six decades she reinvented herself as Diana Serra Cary, a respected film historian and advocate for laws protecting child performers. With narration co-written by Cary, Vera Iwerebor's documentary combines rare clips from Baby Peggy's films - most of which were lost when her first studio, Century, burned in 1926 - with a personal glimpse of a woman who lost her childhood to the movies. -- (C) Official Site

NA WEWE; Belgium; Oscar Nominee: Ivan Goldschmidt. 1994: There is civil war in Burundi, a small country of Central Africa directly bordering Rwanda. A near genocidal confrontation opposes rebels mainly composed of ethnic Hutus and a national army with a majority of Tutsis. This short film relates a sadly frequent episode of this fratricidal conflict: the attack by rebels of a minivan carrying ordinary citizens. A Kalashnikov bursts out. The bus stops, the passengers get off. An order is barked: "Hutus to the left, Tutsis to the right!" The sorting out begins. But who is a Hutu, who is a Tutsi? This story is entirely based on real people and situations. It was written by a person who has lived in the beauty of Burundi and suffered its horrors. With emotion, suspense and humor it exposes the absurdity of ethnic and racial strife. "NA WEWE" (pronounce "Na wayway") means "You too" in Kirundi. (19 min.)
