Seeking a better life for herself and her daughter, Lisa, Jian Ping left China in 1986 to pursue graduate studies in the U.S. She left behind her parents, former senior government officials, but not the memory of their shattered lives. Jian's daughter, Lisa, joined her in Queens, New York when the girl was four-and-a-half. They moved to Chicago, where Jian joined corporate America, eventually becoming the national director of Tsingtao Beer. Lisa's childhood was the reverse of her mother's, growing up as an utterly unencumbered American girl; living in suburban Chicago Lisa earned a great education, built a successful public relations career and learned to enjoy the best parts of life: good friends, worldwide travel and partying. However, both mother and daughter felt an ever-widening breach in their relationship. The more Jian longed for a closer relationship and for Lisa to know her family roots, the further she pulled away, culminating in Lisa's disinterest in Jian's memoir, which had taken her eight years to write.

Originally the featured performer, she has given way to Wolfgang as the main attraction, as their strict but loving father Leopold (Marc Barbe) tours his talented offspring in front of the royal courts of pre-French revolution Europe. A love story like no other. He is tall and thin and very handsome, but cannot see or hear. She is tiny with a strikingly beautiful face. South Koreans Young-Chan and Soon-Ho are a loving married couple who communicate through finger braille (a touch-based sign language which she taps into his palm; he responds verbally). Often he carries her on his shoulders and together they accomplish ordinary domestic tasks to which the rest of us wouldn't give a second thought. Young-Chan is an accomplished poet and his writings imbue the film with an otherworldly sensibility that reflects his self-image as a snail or as an astronaut. It is tempting to see them as characters from a fairytale, cursed by an evil spell. In reality, the extraordinary love which passes between them suggests the opposite: that they are blessed with immeasurable happiness the rest of us would be fortunate to experience. This new omnibus film, a remarkably successful example of a famously cursed form, brings together short films by four renowned and legendary filmmakers - Aki Kaurismaki, Pedro Costa, Victor Erice, and Manoel de Oliveira. Though unified by a common theme - the producers asked each filmmaker to take their inspiration from the Portuguese city of Guimaraes, the European Cultural Capital for 2012, and in particular to reflect on "the stories the city has to tell" - these four short films are radically different from each other. As a whole, CENTRO HISTORICO encompasses four unique and varied perspectives on an ancient European city, as well as demonstrating the thrillingly varied range of sensibilities of these visionary filmmakers.
