FRIENDED TO DEATH charts the extremes to which a desperate Facebook junkie will go in order to figure out who his true friends are. Laced with satire, this tongue-in-cheek bro-mantic comedy tells the story of obnoxious Los Angeles parking enforcement officer Michael Harris (Hansen). After being fired from his dream job and ditched by his best friend (McGowan), Michael begins to question whether anyone would care if he died. So with the help of his pushover ex-coworker Emile (Immekus), Michael does what any social media-obsessed loner would do: He fakes his death online to see who will show up at his funeral. In just hours, Michael's fake death post attracts a promising 22 'Likes.' Giddy and eager to milk the prank, Michael convinces Emile to help him stage a faux memorial service. But as plans start taking shape, Michael's reality gradually implodes, forcing him to reconsider what it means to be a "friend" in today's hyper-connected world of social media. (c) GreenStep

Romance is in the air in this bohemian charmer. (18 min.) NA WEWE; Belgium; Oscar Nominee: Ivan Goldschmidt. 1994: There is civil war in Burundi, a small country of Central Africa directly bordering Rwanda. A near genocidal confrontation opposes rebels mainly composed of ethnic Hutus and a national army with a majority of Tutsis. This short film relates a sadly frequent episode of this fratricidal conflict: the attack by rebels of a minivan carrying ordinary citizens. A Kalashnikov bursts out. The bus stops, the passengers get off. An order is barked: "Hutus to the left, Tutsis to the right!" The sorting out begins. But who is a Hutu, who is a Tutsi? This story is entirely based on real people and situations. It was written by a person who has lived in the beauty of Burundi and suffered its horrors. With emotion, suspense and humor it exposes the absurdity of ethnic and racial strife. "NA WEWE" (pronounce "Na wayway") means "You too" in Kirundi. (19 min.) WISH 143; United Kingdom; Oscar Nominees: Ian Barnes and Samantha Waite. A fifteen-year-old boy with only months to live is granted one wish from the Dreamscape Charity. But David doesn't want to go to Disneyland or meet Gary Neville; what he really wants is an hour alone with a naked woman. (24 min.) -- (C) Magnolia

Three bizarre tales of terror and eroticism are brought together in this thriller anthology. In House and Home, Richard (Luke de Lacey) and Victoria (Siubhan Harrison) are a couple whose marriage has gone sour, and the rare pleasure they derive from being together comes from a strange ritual they perform with unknowing and unwilling guests. However, when Richard invites a young homeless woman in for a meal and some spiritual counseling, he and Victoria find themselves in for far more than they expected. Mutant Tool stars Jodie Jameson as Jennifer, a former junkie and prostitute who is trying to stay off the streets with the help of her boyfriend Frank (Daniel Brocklebank). A doctor has prescribed Jennifer a special medication to help her deal with withdrawal, but the side effects seem almost worse than going cold turkey, and in time she learns the bizarre nature of the drug and how it's produced. And finally, Bitch concerns Pete (Tom Sawyer) and Claire (Kate Braithwaite), a couple whose relationship is defined by extreme S&M role-playing. Claire is the dominant partner and Pete is a willing bottom, but he's beginning to grow weary of Claire's treatment, and one night he turns the tables with startling results. In 1977, George Lucas released Star Wars, the ultimate sci-fi popcorn flick-turned-pop-culture myth machine. It quickly became the biggest money-making film of all time and changed the shape of the film industry. After two successful sequels (1980's The Empire Strikes Back and 1983's Return of the Jedi) that extended the story of the first film, Lucas took some time off to produce movies for others, with mixed success. In 1999, Lucas returned to the Star Wars saga with a new approach -- instead of picking up where Return of the Jedi left off, Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace would be the first of a trilogy of stories to trace what happened in the intergalactic saga before the first film began. Here, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) is a young apprentice Jedi knight under the tutelage of Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson); Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who will later father Luke Skywalker and become known as Darth Vader, is just a nine-year-old boy. When the Trade Federation cuts off all routes to the planet Naboo, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are assigned to settle the matter, but when they arrive on Naboo they are brought to Amidala (Natalie Portman), the Naboo queen, by a friendly but opportunistic Gungan named Jar Jar. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan plan to escort Amidala to a meeting of Republic leaders in Coruscant, but trouble with their spacecraft strands them on the planet Tatooine, where Qui-Gon meets Anakin, the slave of a scrap dealer. Qui-Gon is soon convinced that the boy could be the leader the Jedis have been searching for, and he begins bargaining for his freedom and teaching the boy the lessons of the Force. The supporting cast includes Pernilla August as Anakin's mother, Terence Stamp as Chancellor Valorum, and Samuel L. Jackson as Jedi master Mace Windu. Jackson told a reporter before The Phantom Menace's release that the best part about doing the film was that he got to say "May the Force be with you" onscreen. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
