The Legend of Pale Male is the true account of one of the most surprising and remarkable love stories in the history of New York City. It begins in 1993, when a young man from Belgium looking to change his life has an unexpected encounter in Central Park. He meets a hawk. Not just any hawk, but a wild Redtail, a fierce predator that has not lived in the City for almost a hundred years. Affectionately known to New Yorkers as Pale Male, the hawk becomes a magnificent obsession -a metaphor for triumph against all odds. His nest, perched high on a posh Fifth Avenue co-op, starts out as a novel curiosity to a handful of avid birdwatchers but becomes an international tourist destination - a place of pilgrimage. Then, without warning, one December afternoon the building manager dismantles Pale Male's nest. The act unites an unlikely family of birdwatchers, movie stars, poets, children, dogs, reporters, and celebrities, including Mary Tyler Moore and David Letterman. What unfolds next could only happen in New York. -- (C) Balcony Releasing

SATAN HATES YOU is the latest feature film from producer Larry Fessenden's Glass Eye Pix and writer/director James Felix McKenney's MonsterPants Movies. The film has been in the process of being shot in small segments since 2005 while McKenney and company worked on other projects, including the critically acclaimed AUTOMATONS. The final shoot, which makes up the bulk of SATAN HATES YOU, was completed in July of 2008. Inspired by films from the golden age of religious cinema such as A THIEF IN THE NIGHT (1972), IF FOOTMEN TIRE YOU, WHAT WILL HORSES DO? (1971) and STALKED (1969), SATAN HATES YOU is a graphic horror film that tells the stories of two individuals and their personal struggles with Lucifer himself. We follow Marc (Don Wood) a homicidal maniac driven by demons buried deep within his soul, and Wendy (Christine Spencer) Marc's polar opposite who lives life fast and hard without a second's thought to the consequences. Their separate paths will eventually cross, but will it be on the road to salvation or the highway to hell? -- (C) Official Site

The action takes place shortly after the end of the Second World War in the Siberian hinterland, among Russians and Germans with damaged personal stories and a strange transformation: the victors seem to be crawling into the skins of the defeated, and vice versa. Ignat, is the embodiment of the larger-than-life image of the Soviet victorious warrior who, in fact, proves to be shell-shocked, sick and broken, although not completely destroyed. Trains become fetish for the heroes of the film, and speed becomes a mania; they virtually become one with their steam engines, while the machines take on human names. The heroes set up an almost fatal race in the Siberian forest, risking their own lives and those of others.

In 1994, civil war broke out in Rwanda, leading to bloody infighting between the nation's two principle ethnic groups, the Hutus and the Tutsis. Rwandan filmmaker Alrick Brown examines this dark page in his country's history in this drama. Kinyarwanda traces a handful of interconnected stories of both hatred and compassion amidst the bloodshed of 1994. As Hutus launch their massacre of the Tutsis, a powerful Muslim leader (Jean Mutsari) opens his mosque to those on either side who seek peaceful refuge. The Mufti is joined by a Catholic priest (Kennedy Mpazimpaka) who is being hunted down due to his Tutsi background. Two Rwandan soldiers (Cassandra Freeman and Kena Anae Onyenjekwe) bond as they try to keep order and help refugees as they discuss their feelings on the massacre. A young boy unwittingly invites the violence into his family's home as a young couple (Zaninka Hadidja and Marc Gwamaka) finds their mixed ethnic heritage puts them both at risk. And one Hutu insurgent (Edouard Bamporiki) is in time forced to answer for his violent actions. Kinyarwanda was an official selection at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Chastity Bono grew up in the public eye as the daughter of pop stars Sonny & Cher, making occasional appearances on their popular television show in the 1970s. But Chastity was not the person the public imagined she was; Bono struggled with gender and sexual identity issues for years before coming out as a transsexual, a man living in the body of a woman. Adopting the name Chaz Bono, the former Chastity set out on the long road to physically transform his body into that of a man. Filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato were given near total access to Bono as he deals with the physical and emotional challenges of reshaping his body into that of a male (as well as the complex legal ramifications) in the documentary Becoming Chaz. The film also includes interviews with Chaz's mother Cher, his longtime girlfriend Jennifer Elia, and his stepmother Mary Bono Mack, all of whom have their own ways of dealing with profound changes in someone they love. An economically depressed steel-making city in northeast China, the present day. Chen Guilin is an accordionist who runs a small band with other unemployed friends and has an easygoing relationship with Shuxian, the singer in the group. After going off with a wealthy manufacturer of fake medicine, Chen's wife Xiao Ju returns and asks him for a divorce - which he agrees to - plus custody of their young daughter Xiao Yuan - which he doesn't. Xiao Yuan is the apple of Chen's eye and he's been spending the little money he has on lessons for her to become a pianist. Xiao Yuan says she'll stay with whomever provides her with a piano, so Chen first tries borrowing money from friends and relatives, and then stealing one from a local school - all without success. He then decides there's only one solution: to make one, using pilfered parts from disused factories, wood from demolished buildings, and scrap metal left over from a closed foundry. He assembles all his friends to help in the project, including the scholarly Wang who works out how to build a piano from a manual, local "businessman" Brother Ji who lets him use a decrepit factory and supervises the smelting of the iron frame, ex-con Lightning Fingers who pilfers small parts, and friend Wang Kangmei to help Shuxian with the cooking.

The Romanian New Wave of the past decade has yielded such internationally acclaimed gems as 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, The Death of Mr. Lazarescu and 12:08 East of Bucharest. Add to them Tuesday, After Christmas, an elegant, emotionally resonant drama of a middle-class couple whose 10-year marriage is rocked by the husband's illicit affair with their daughter's sexy dentist. In many respects it's an oft-told tale: Paul must choose between the easy rapport and stability of his family life and the uncertainty and excitement of a relationship with a much younger woman. In scorchingly intense long takes, the power dynamics among these three are unpredictable and, in the end, devastating. The fact that the two leads are actually a married couple adds to the verisimilitude. --(c) Lorber

THE HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER is a dramedy centered on the HR manager of Israel's largest industrial bakery, who sets out to save the reputation of his business and prevent the publication of a defamatory article. It was Israel's official entry for the 2011 Academy Awards Best Foreign Film category. HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER is a Film Movement release, runs for 103 minutes, is in Hebrew, English and Romanian with English subtitles, and is not yet MPAA-rated. The Human Resources Manager of Jerusalem's largest bakery is in trouble. He is separated from his wife, distanced from his daughter and stuck in a job he hates. When one of his employees, a foreign worker, is killed in a suicide bombing, the bakery is accused of indifference, and the HR Manager is sent to the victim's hometown in Romania to make amends. Far from home, on a mission to honor a woman he didn't even know but has somehow grown to admire, the HR Manager rediscovers his own humanity and his ability to truly care for human resources. Eran Riklis' THE HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER is based on an Israeli book that was recommended to him-A.B. Yehoshua's A Woman in Jerusalem (a New York Times notable book, and L.A. Times Book Prize winner, among other awards.) Keeping with the book, Riklis made the calculated decision not to name any of his characters (save the deceased woman inspiring the trip) but rather rely on their professions and personal attributes to identify and define them-the HR Manager, The Weasel, The Boy... These character archetypes lack a certain individuality and could, in turn, be any of us. In this act Riklis challenges the conventional and quirky road-trip movie and, in his words, creates a film that is "offbeat and kind of mainstream in a way." He calls THE HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER "an asymmetrical road movie." It played at numerous international film festivals, including Toronto and Palm Springs, and captured the Audience Award at the Locarno Int'l Film Festival. Riklis' film features fearless performances by a comedic ensemble cast led by the well-known Ukrainian actor Mark Ivanir, whose resume includes Spielberg's SCHINDLER'S LIST; HOLLY ROLLERS (with Social Network's Jesse Eisenberg), and Robert De Niro's THE GOOD SHEPHERD. -- (C) Film Movement
