A Second Knock at the Door is an award-winning documentary that offers a rare glimpse into the lives of military families dealing with the loss of loved ones to friendly fire. Through interviews and investigative reports, this film explores key incidents that forced families of the fallen to embark on individual but integrally linked quests for the truth after the Army attempted to bury the truth within the "fog of war." Unwilling to allow these soldiers to be defined by their death, A Second Knock at the Door explores the men outside of their uniforms through the eyes of the communities that saw them not only as heroes but as sons, husbands, fathers, fiances, and friends. Chastity Bono grew up in the public eye as the daughter of pop stars Sonny & Cher, making occasional appearances on their popular television show in the 1970s. But Chastity was not the person the public imagined she was; Bono struggled with gender and sexual identity issues for years before coming out as a transsexual, a man living in the body of a woman. Adopting the name Chaz Bono, the former Chastity set out on the long road to physically transform his body into that of a man. Filmmakers Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato were given near total access to Bono as he deals with the physical and emotional challenges of reshaping his body into that of a male (as well as the complex legal ramifications) in the documentary Becoming Chaz. The film also includes interviews with Chaz's mother Cher, his longtime girlfriend Jennifer Elia, and his stepmother Mary Bono Mack, all of whom have their own ways of dealing with profound changes in someone they love. The Romanian New Wave of the past decade has yielded such internationally acclaimed gems as 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, The Death of Mr. Lazarescu and 12:08 East of Bucharest. Add to them Tuesday, After Christmas, an elegant, emotionally resonant drama of a middle-class couple whose 10-year marriage is rocked by the husband's illicit affair with their daughter's sexy dentist. In many respects it's an oft-told tale: Paul must choose between the easy rapport and stability of his family life and the uncertainty and excitement of a relationship with a much younger woman. In scorchingly intense long takes, the power dynamics among these three are unpredictable and, in the end, devastating. The fact that the two leads are actually a married couple adds to the verisimilitude. --(c) Lorber
