Shades of Hamlet among the gypsies (the Roma): A Czech-Slovakian tale of a teenage boy who loses his father and distrusts his sleazy new stepdad. This poignant, resonant drama is equal parts neo-realism and modern Shakespearean tragedy. As Americans, most of us know little of the hardscrabble lives of contemporary gypsies, or their pariah status in Eastern Europe. A multiple prize-winner at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival last year, Gypsy limns memorable portraits, some flecked with bitter humor: the boy who dreams of going to Western Europe so that he may be mistaken for Pakistani; stolen ostriches accepted as payment in lieu of cash; the white documentary film crew whose members combine compassion with unconscious racism. -- (C) Film Forum

Ten years after exploding onto the international music scene with their debut album Boy, in 1990 U2 were struggling to reinvent themselves and find a new direction. The 1988 concert film Rattle and Hum and its accompanying soundtrack album didn't please fans or critics, and the group's attempts to fuse American roots music with their trademark style clearly wasn't working. The four members of the group -- vocalist Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. -- were at odds with one another and uncertain about their musical future. The group responded to their dilemma by throwing out their self-imposed rule book and making the album Achtung, Baby, in which the group faced down their uncertainties and responded with the most stylistically ambitious music they'd ever created. Filmmaker Davis Guggenheim offers a rare glimpse into U2's creative process with the documentary From The Sky On Down, in which the band discusses the making of Achtung, Baby and opens up about the issues within the band and in the outside world that inspired its creation. The film also includes rare audio and video of U2 in rehearsal and in the studio while the album was in production. From The Sky Down received its world premiere at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

AND EVERYTHING IS GOING FINE provides an intimate look at master monologist Spalding Gray, as described by his most critical, irreverent and insightful biographer: Spalding Gray. Director Steven Soderbergh, who collaborated with Gray on the film adaptation of his celebrated Gray's Anatomy (1996), has distilled 25 years of rare and revealing footage to construct a riveting final monologue. There are glimpses of Gray's father and of his son Forrest (who provides soaring music for the end credits), but for the most part this is an inspired one-man show, a bittersweet display of the writer-performer's playful and embattled intelligence, his gift for tracking universal truths by looking himself squarely in the eye. "At the very first meeting I had with Steven to discuss making the film, he said 'I want Spalding to tell the story of Spalding,'" notes Kathleen Russo, Gray's widow and one of the producers of the film. "After that, there was no question in my mind about anyone else directing this movie. So I handed him 120 hours of Spalding footage, which became a 90-minute documentary, all told by Spalding through the eyes of Steven Soderbergh. This is a labor of love between the director, the editor, the producers and the family of Spalding Gray-a collaboration whose main goal was to have one more story be told by one of the most unique monologists of our time." Spalding Gray is most celebrated for his series of 18 monologues, including Sex and Death to the Age 14; Booze, Cars and College Girls; A Personal History of the American Theater; India and After (America); Monster in a Box; Gray's Anatomy; It's a Slippery Slope; Morning, Noon and Night and the Obie Award-winning Swimming to Cambodia. He performed with The Performance Group and The Wooster Group, and on Broadway in plays by Gore Vidal, Thornton Wilde and others. In addition to the film adaptations of his own works-among them Swimming to Cambodia, directed by Jonathan Demme, and Monster in a Box, directed by Nick Broomfield-Gray appeared in more than 40 films, including Roland Joffe's The Killing Fields; David Byrne's True Stories; Soderbergh's King of the Hill and John Boorman's Beyond Rangoon.-- (C) IFC

The sublime Barbara Sukowa reteams with director Margarethe von Trotta (Vision, Rosa Luxemburg) for her brilliant new biopic of influential German-Jewish philosopher and political theorist Hannah Arendt. Arendt's reporting on the 1961 trial of ex-Nazi Adolf Eichmann in The New Yorker-controversial both for her portrayal of Eichmann and the Jewish councils-introduced her now-famous concept of the "Banality of Evil." Using footage from the actual Eichmann trial and weaving a narrative that spans three countries, von Trotta beautifully turns the often invisible passion of thought into immersive, dramatic cinema. An Official Selection at the Toronto International and New York Jewish Film Festivals, Hannah Arendt also co-stars Klaus Pohl as philosopher Martin Heidegger, Nicolas Woodeson as New Yorker editor William Shawn, and two-time Oscar Nominee Janet McTeer (Albert Nobbs) as novelist Mary McCarthy. Welcome to Williamsburg, New York's new bohemia. Or is it? In the late 1980s artists moved into this working class neighborhood, populated by small manufacturers, Polish butchers, and auto repair shops, just across the East River. SoHo took 30 years to change from an artists' bohemia to an art gallery hotspot, to an outdoor shopping mall; Williamsburg's demise has been much faster, due in part to a 2005 zoning law change. With a winning combination of wit, anger, and political savvy, filmmaker Su Friedrich, and co-writer Cathy Quinlan, record how the neighborhood has changed from when they arrived in 1989 to the rich-hipster haven it has become. Friedrich casts a jaundiced eye on the sleek granite kitchen counters featured at the condo openings she attends; she paints graffiti on construction fences ("Artists Used To Live Here") and comments wryly on her new neighbors ("What's with all the fancy dogs?"). She gives up mapping all new construction with building number 173. For anyone who has ever moved to an affordable neighborhood only to find that gentrification renders it unaffordable - this is the movie for you. (c) Film Forum

Screenwriter Rowan Joffe's debut feature Brighton Rock embraces the classic elements of film noir and the British gangster film to tell the story of Pinkie, a desperate youth who is hell bent on clawing his way up through the ranks of organized crime. When a young and very innocent waitress, Rose, stumbles on evidence linking him to a revenge killing, he sets out to seduce her to secure her silence. The film stars up-and-coming British actors Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough as the young couple. Veterans Helen Mirren and John Hurt co-star as two friends who set out to save Rose from Pinkie's deviant designs. Brighton Rock is based on the iconic 1939 Graham Greene novel of innocence and evil but the action has been updated to 1964 Britain, the year the Mods and the Rockers were rioting across the South Coast. The 60s were also the era of the great British gangster, the kind of working class hero, the frightened and ambitious Pinkie longs to be. -- (C) Offical Site

A further entry in the rapidly proliferating, rich vein of documentary/fiction hybrids, Oliver Laxe's You All Are Captains channels the meta-textuality, genre bending, and sensitivity towards children found in the best work of Abbas Kiarostami and Francois Truffaut. Laxe himself stars as a self-described "neo-colonialist" filmmaker who goes to Tangiers ostensibly to hold a series of film workshops for disadvantaged street children. It quickly becomes clear, however, that Laxe's intentions are not purely disinterested, as he begins to turn these children into pawns in the service of his own film. As the kids resist Laxe's project, the film becomes a fascinating combination of self-reflexivity, self-deprecation, and documentary portraiture (of the children and of life in Tangiers). -- (C) Anthology

Strange things are happening to a handful of people lost in the woods in this offbeat horror film from Israeli filmmakers Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado. Tali (Liat Har Lev) has become trapped in a stretch of mine shaft that hasn't been used in years, and her brother Ofer (David Henry) is desperate to free her, in part for the sake of her safety and partly in fear of their parents learning their shocking secret. Tennis players Adi (Ania Bukstein) and Shir (Yael Grobglas) are en route to a match with Mike (Ran Danker) and Pini (Ofer Shechter) when a short cut goes wrong and they end up lost. Menashe (Menashe Noy) is a forest ranger who senses things are not quite right while talking his dog for a walk. And Dani (Lior Ashkenazi) and Yuval (Danny Geva) are a pair of clumsy police officers patrolling the area. Ofer flags down the tennis players for help, and before long the cops and the forest ranger show up. As this group of strangers try to deal with the immediate crisis, they soon discover a serial killer is on the loose, and deadly violence is appearing in unexpected places. Billed as the first Israeli slasher film, Kalevet (aka Rabies) received its North American premiere at the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival, where it screened as part of the Cinemania program. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

A hidden enclave in the shadow of the New York Mets' new stadium, the neighborhood of Willets Point is an industrial zone fated for demolition. Filled with scrapyards and auto salvage shops, lacking sidewalks or sewage lines, the area seems ripe for urban development. But Foreign Parts discovers a strange community where wrecks, refuse and recycling form a thriving commerce. Cars are stripped, sorted and cataloged by brand and part, then resold to an endless parade of drive-thru customers. Joe, the last original resident, rages and rallies through the street like a lost King Lear, trying to contest his imminent eviction. Two lovers, Sara and Luis, struggle for food and safety through the winter while living in an abandoned van. Julia, the homeless queen of the junkyard, exalts in her beatific visions of daily life among the forgotten. The film observes and captures the struggle of a contested "eminent domain" neighborhood before its disappearance under the capitalization of New York's urban ecology. -- (C) Official Site
